Understanding the Concern

What Causes Thinning Lips and Lines Around the Mouth?

Lips naturally lose volume and definition over time but several factors can accelerate this process. Understanding the causes can help you choose the right treatment for lip rejuvenation:

  • Loss of Collagen & Elastin – As we age, collagen production declines, leading to thinner lips, reduced firmness, and fine lines around the mouth.
  • Sun Exposure – UV damage breaks down collagen and elastin, causing premature ageing, lip lines, and discolouration.
  • Repeated Expressions & Lip Movement – Everyday facial movements — like smiling, speaking, and drinking from straws — contribute to dynamic lines forming around the lips.
  • Dehydration & Poor Lip Care – Lack of hydration and neglecting regular lip care can leave lips dry, cracked, and more prone to ageing.
  • Lifestyle Factors – Smoking, stress, and poor diet can accelerate the visible signs of ageing around the lips and mouth area.

Lip Lines, Smile Lines or Marionette Lines?

The lines around the mouth are often grouped together, but they are three distinct concerns. Lip lines (sometimes called lipstick lines or smoker’s lines) are the fine vertical lines running into the lip border itself, formed by repeated lip movement and accelerated by sun exposure and smoking.

Smile lines the nasolabial folds are the deeper creases running from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Marionette lines run downward from the mouth corners towards the chin and tend to create a downturned, tired expression.

Each has a different cause and responds to a different approach, and many people present with more than one. During your consultation, Dr Joanna Teh assesses which lines are present, what is driving them volume loss, skin-quality change, muscle movement or a combination and recommends a plan in the right order.

If your main concern is the nose-to-mouth folds, see our nasolabial and smile line page. If downturned mouth corners are making you look tired or sad, see tired-looking appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Lips lose volume for the same reason the rest of the face does: collagen and elastin production declines, and the structural support beneath the lip diminishes. The lip border (vermilion border) softens and loses definition, the Cupid’s bow flattens, and the body of the lip deflates.
  • Sun exposure accelerates all of this — lips have thin skin and minimal natural protection, which matters in Perth’s high-UV climate. Genetics also play a large role in how early and how noticeably lips thin.
  • Yes, you can. The vertical lines around the lips are often called smoker’s lines, but their primary cause is thousands of repetitions of normal lip movement — speaking, sipping, pursing acting on skin that is gradually losing collagen.
  • Smoking accelerates them significantly (both through the repeated pursing motion and the effect of smoking on skin), and sun damage is a major contributor.
  • Many non-smokers develop them, particularly those with fair, sun-exposed skin.
  • Yes. Non-surgical approaches at Dermedica include skin resurfacing to smooth the lines around the mouth, collagen-stimulating treatments to improve the quality and firmness of the surrounding skin, and medical options to address volume and definition that we cannot describe on our website due to TGA advertising regulations.
  • The right approach depends on whether your concern is mostly the lip itself, the skin around it, or both which is what your consultation determines.
  • For the fine lines around the mouth, Dermedica offers DermaGlow fractional erbium laser resurfacing (smooths texture and softens lines), RestoraGlow, Rejuran and chemical peels (which improve the quality, firmness and hydration of the skin around the lips).
  • Additional medical treatments are available but cannot be named here due to advertising restrictions — Dr Joanna Teh will discuss the complete range of suitable options with you personally at consultation.
  • This is the most common concern we hear, and it is a reasonable one overdone lips are highly visible.
  • Dermedica’s approach is conservative and doctor-led: the aim is restoring what time has changed, not creating something new.
  • Treatment plans are built around your facial proportions, staged gradually where appropriate, and discussed honestly at consultation including what we would advise against.
  • Realistic expectations and informed consent are part of every plan.
  • Lip lines are the fine vertical lines running into the lip border itself.
  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds) are the deeper creases from the nose to the mouth corners.
  • Marionette lines run from the mouth corners down towards the chin.
  • They have different causes and different treatments, and they frequently appear together.
  • If you are not sure which you have or which to address first that is precisely what an assessment with Dr Joanna Teh resolves.
  • Daily sun protection is the single most effective step: an SPF lip balm reapplied through the day, plus a hat in strong sun.
  • Not smoking or stopping makes a measurable difference to lip lines.
  • Staying hydrated and using a regular lip moisturiser keeps the lip surface in better condition.
  • These habits also protect the results of any treatment you have, which is why prevention is part of every treatment plan we build.
  • It depends on the treatment. Skin-quality treatments such as peels and Rejuran typically involve short-lived redness or minor marks at most.
  • Laser resurfacing around the mouth involves some days of redness and recovery, planned around your schedule.
  • Any downtime relevant to options discussed at your consultation will be explained clearly before you decide, so there are no surprises.
  • It varies by treatment. Collagen-stimulating and resurfacing treatments build improvement over weeks to months, and results can last a year or more depending on your skin and how it continues to age; periodic maintenance is common.
  • Durations for other medical options are discussed at consultation.
  • Individual results vary, and Dr Joanna Teh will give you realistic timeframes for the specific plan recommended to you.
  • Dr Joanna Teh (General and Specialist Registration – General Practice – MED0001531429) personally assesses your lip structure, the type and depth of your lines, and the balance between volume loss, skin-quality change and muscle movement — the three drivers that determine which treatment actually helps.
  • You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what is causing the change and a staged plan skin resurfacing or collagen-stimulating treatment where appropriate, and medical options discussed where relevant at our clinic in Scarborough, Perth, with no obligation to proceed.

Learn more

Chin

Breakouts around the chin are often hormonally driven and can lead to lingering scars, texture irregularities, or pigmentation.

Learn more

A flat, receding or uneven chin can subtly impact your facial balance. Restoring shape and projection in the chin area can enhance harmony, confidence, and the way you’re perceived in profile.

Learn more

Horizontal lines or deep creases across the chin often develop with age or repeated muscle movement, contributing to a tired or aged look.

Learn more

Sun exposure or post-inflammatory changes can cause dark spots, uneven skin tone, or freckles to form on the chin area.

Learn more

Do you notice persistent redness or small red veins around your chin? These may be signs of broken capillaries or spider veins — a common concern that often becomes more visible with age or sensitivity. While subtle, they can affect how you feel in photos, under makeup, or in daylight.

Learn more

Jowls/Marionette Lines

Loss of skin firmness along the jawline and lower face can lead to the appearance of jowls and deepened marionette lines, often due to aging, collagen loss, or gravity.

Learn more

Marionette lines and jowls can create a downturned expression, making the face appear sad or fatigued even when well-rested.

Learn more

Chronic sun exposure accelerates collagen breakdown, leading to premature skin aging, uneven tone, and deeper lines around the mouth and jaw.

Learn more

Double Chin

A double chin refers to the appearance of excess fat or sagging skin beneath the chin and along the jawline. It can be caused by aging, genetics, poor skin elasticity, or weight gain. This concern may lead to a softer jawline and less facial definition, even in people with a healthy weight.

Learn more

Accumulation of fat under the chin that creates a “double chin” appearance.

Learn more

Loosened or lax skin under the chin and jawline, often due to ageing or weight changes.

Learn more

Smile lines, or nasolabial folds, are the natural creases that run from the nose to the mouth. They can become more prominent over time due to ageing and facial movement.

Learn more

Jaw Slimming

Reducing lower face fullness (often from muscle or fat) to create a more contoured, V-shaped appearance

Learn more

Laxity along the jawline can cause jowls and blur the definition of the lower face.

Learn more

Treatments aim to tighten the skin and enhance jawline definition for a sculpted, youthful look.

Learn more

Rejuvenation of the jawline with a focus on skin tightening and revitalising tired or heavy-looking lower face.

Learn more

Cheeks

Inflammatory acne and lingering scars on the cheeks can impact skin texture and confidence.

Learn more

Sun-induced spots or uneven skin tone often appear prominently on the cheeks, creating a mottled or patchy appearance

Learn more

A lack of definition or volume in the cheek area may affect overall facial balance and profile.

Learn more

Hormonal pigmentation commonly affects the cheeks in symmetrical brown or greyish patches, often triggered by sun and heat.

Learn more

Loss of volume and firmness in the cheeks can lead to a drawn or aged appearance.

Learn more

Redness, flushing, and visible veins frequently affect the cheeks, especially in sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.

Learn more

Lips

Fine lines, volume loss, and dryness around the lips can develop with age, affecting lip shape and definition

Learn more

Dark patches or uneven tone may appear on or around the lips due to sun exposure, hormonal changes, or inflammation

Learn more

Breakouts around the mouth and chin can lead to inflammation and scarring, often worsened by hormonal fluctuations or mask-wearing.

Learn more

Nose

Breakouts and post-inflammatory marks commonly appear on the nose due to excess oil and clogged pores

Learn more

Small brown spots or uneven skin tone caused by sun exposure can concentrate on the bridge and tip of the nose.

Learn more

Discolouration beneath the eyes that can make the area appear shadowed or tired.

Learn more

The nose often shows enlarged pores and blackheads due to high sebaceous activity and buildup.

Learn more

Though more common on the cheeks and forehead, melasma may appear on the nose as symmetrical brown patches triggered by hormones and sun exposure.

Learn more

Eyes

Fine lines that appear around the outer corners of the eyes, often more noticeable with facial movement or smiling.

Learn more

Discolouration beneath the eyes that can make the area appear shadowed or tired.

Learn more

A heaviness or sagging appearance of the upper eyelid area, which can contribute to a more tired or aged look.

Learn more

Mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes, often associated with fluid retention or skin changes over time.

Learn more

A common concern where the eye area may appear dull, puffy, or shadowed, often giving a fatigued or less refreshed appearance.

Learn more

Visible creases or folds beneath the eyes, which may become more noticeable with age or repeated facial expressions.

Learn more

Fade the look of sun spots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation for a more even-toned complexion.

Learn more

Support the management of hormonally triggered pigmentation with tailored skin treatments.

Learn more

Enlarged pores on the forehead are often due to excess oil, aging, or sun damage, making the skin texture appear uneven.
