Broken Capillaries or Red Chin

Reduce redness. Restore balance.

Do you notice persistent redness or small red veins around your chin? These may be signs of broken capillaries or spider veins — a common concern that often becomes more visible with age or sensitivity. While subtle, they can affect how you feel in photos, under makeup, or in daylight.

Recognising the Concern

Do You Notice These Changes?

Broken Capillaries

Fine, visible red or purple lines under the skin caused by dilated blood vessels. Often appear around the nose, cheeks, or chin and may become more noticeable in natural light.

Red Chin

Persistent redness or flushing across the chin, sometimes linked to sensitivity, rosacea, or vascular changes. Skin may appear blotchy or uneven in tone.

Understanding the Concern

What Causes Redness or Broken Capillaries on the Chin?

As skin ages, it becomes thinner and more reactive, making facial vessels—especially around the chin—more visible. This happens due to dilated capillaries (telangiectasia), flushing or diffuse redness, and the appearance of broken capillaries or spider veins.

Lifestyle and Environmental Triggers:

  • Chronic sun exposure
  • Rosacea and inflammation
  • Alcohol or hot beverages
  • Harsh skincare, over-exfoliation
  • Genetics and hormones
  • Temperature extremes (heat, wind)

Treatment Options

Approaches We May Discuss

Vascular Laser Treatment

Targets visible facial veins and capillaries with precision to reduce redness and improve skin clarity.

OPL (Advanced IPL) Treatment

Optimised Pulsed Light is more targeted than traditional IPL, making it effective for redness, flushing and capillary visibility.

Redness-Calming Skincare

For some cases, we may recommend topical skincare to strengthen the skin barrier and reduce facial redness between sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Unlike temporary flushing, broken capillaries (telangiectasia) are dilated blood vessels that generally do not disappear on their own once they become visible.
  • Skincare can help calm surrounding redness and protect the skin barrier, but the vessels themselves usually need targeted treatment such as vascular laser or OPL to fade.
  • The most effective options are light- and laser-based treatments. Vascular laser precisely targets the visible vessel, while OPL (Optimised Pulsed Light) treats diffuse redness, flushing and finer capillaries.
  • The blood vessel absorbs the light energy, causing it to collapse and gradually be reabsorbed by the body over the following weeks.
  • The right option depends on the size, depth and location of the vessels, which is assessed during your consultation.
  • The chin is a common area for visible vessels and redness because the skin there is frequently exposed to friction, heat and irritation.
  • Contributing factors include sun exposure, rosacea, genetics, hormones, alcohol and hot drinks, temperature extremes, and harsh skincare or over-exfoliation.
  • Skin also becomes thinner with age, which makes underlying vessels more visible over time.
  • Not always. Rosacea is an ongoing skin condition involving flushing, persistent redness and sometimes bumps, while broken capillaries can occur on their own from sun damage, ageing or irritation though the two often appear together.
  • Distinguishing between them matters because it influences the treatment approach, which is why a proper skin assessment comes first.
  • Yes, light-based treatments are among the most established options for facial vessels and redness.
  • At Dermedica we use OPL a more targeted form of IPL along with vascular laser, selected according to your skin and the vessels being treated.
  • Many patients notice vessels fading progressively over a course of sessions as the treated capillaries are reabsorbed.

  • Many fine capillaries improve within 1 to 3 sessions, while diffuse redness or more extensive vessels may need additional treatments spaced several weeks apart.
  • The number of sessions depends on the size and number of vessels, your skin type and how your skin responds, a realistic estimate is provided after your assessment.
  • Most patients experience only mild redness or warmth for a few hours to a day or two after vascular laser or OPL, and many return to normal activities the same day.
  • Treated vessels can temporarily darken before fading this is a normal part of the process.
  • Sun protection is essential after treatment.
  • Treated vessels do not return once they have been reabsorbed, but new capillaries can form over time, especially if the underlying triggers, such as sun exposure or rosacea, continue.
  • Daily sun protection, gentle skincare and managing your individual triggers help maintain results.
  • Some patients choose occasional maintenance sessions.
  • The cost depends on the treatment used, the size of the area and the number of sessions required, so it varies between patients.
  • After your consultation and skin assessment, you will receive a clear, personalised quote with no obligation to proceed.
  • All treatments at Dermedica are carried out by Dr Joanna Teh (General and Specialist Registration – General Practice – MED0001531429) and her team of experienced nurses and dermal therapists at our clinic in Scarborough, Perth.

Learn more

Chin

Breakouts around the chin are often hormonally driven and can lead to lingering scars, texture irregularities, or pigmentation.

Learn more

A flat, receding or uneven chin can subtly impact your facial balance. Restoring shape and projection in the chin area can enhance harmony, confidence, and the way you’re perceived in profile.

Learn more

Horizontal lines or deep creases across the chin often develop with age or repeated muscle movement, contributing to a tired or aged look.

Learn more

Sun exposure or post-inflammatory changes can cause dark spots, uneven skin tone, or freckles to form on the chin area.

Learn more

Do you notice persistent redness or small red veins around your chin? These may be signs of broken capillaries or spider veins — a common concern that often becomes more visible with age or sensitivity. While subtle, they can affect how you feel in photos, under makeup, or in daylight.

Learn more

Jowls/Marionette Lines

Loss of skin firmness along the jawline and lower face can lead to the appearance of jowls and deepened marionette lines, often due to aging, collagen loss, or gravity.

Learn more

Marionette lines and jowls can create a downturned expression, making the face appear sad or fatigued even when well-rested.

Learn more

Chronic sun exposure accelerates collagen breakdown, leading to premature skin aging, uneven tone, and deeper lines around the mouth and jaw.

Learn more

Double Chin

A double chin refers to the appearance of excess fat or sagging skin beneath the chin and along the jawline. It can be caused by aging, genetics, poor skin elasticity, or weight gain. This concern may lead to a softer jawline and less facial definition, even in people with a healthy weight.

Learn more

Accumulation of fat under the chin that creates a “double chin” appearance.

Learn more

Loosened or lax skin under the chin and jawline, often due to ageing or weight changes.

Learn more

Smile lines, or nasolabial folds, are the natural creases that run from the nose to the mouth. They can become more prominent over time due to ageing and facial movement.

Learn more

Jaw Slimming

Reducing lower face fullness (often from muscle or fat) to create a more contoured, V-shaped appearance

Learn more

Laxity along the jawline can cause jowls and blur the definition of the lower face.

Learn more

Treatments aim to tighten the skin and enhance jawline definition for a sculpted, youthful look.

Learn more

Rejuvenation of the jawline with a focus on skin tightening and revitalising tired or heavy-looking lower face.

Learn more

Cheeks

Inflammatory acne and lingering scars on the cheeks can impact skin texture and confidence.

Learn more

Sun-induced spots or uneven skin tone often appear prominently on the cheeks, creating a mottled or patchy appearance

Learn more

A lack of definition or volume in the cheek area may affect overall facial balance and profile.

Learn more

Hormonal pigmentation commonly affects the cheeks in symmetrical brown or greyish patches, often triggered by sun and heat.

Learn more

Loss of volume and firmness in the cheeks can lead to a drawn or aged appearance.

Learn more

Redness, flushing, and visible veins frequently affect the cheeks, especially in sensitive or rosacea-prone skin.

Learn more

Lips

Fine lines, volume loss, and dryness around the lips can develop with age, affecting lip shape and definition

Learn more

Dark patches or uneven tone may appear on or around the lips due to sun exposure, hormonal changes, or inflammation

Learn more

Breakouts around the mouth and chin can lead to inflammation and scarring, often worsened by hormonal fluctuations or mask-wearing.

Learn more

Nose

Breakouts and post-inflammatory marks commonly appear on the nose due to excess oil and clogged pores

Learn more

Small brown spots or uneven skin tone caused by sun exposure can concentrate on the bridge and tip of the nose.

Learn more

Discolouration beneath the eyes that can make the area appear shadowed or tired.

Learn more

The nose often shows enlarged pores and blackheads due to high sebaceous activity and buildup.

Learn more

Though more common on the cheeks and forehead, melasma may appear on the nose as symmetrical brown patches triggered by hormones and sun exposure.

Learn more

Eyes

Fine lines that appear around the outer corners of the eyes, often more noticeable with facial movement or smiling.

Learn more

Discolouration beneath the eyes that can make the area appear shadowed or tired.

Learn more

A heaviness or sagging appearance of the upper eyelid area, which can contribute to a more tired or aged look.

Learn more

Mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes, often associated with fluid retention or skin changes over time.

Learn more

A common concern where the eye area may appear dull, puffy, or shadowed, often giving a fatigued or less refreshed appearance.

Learn more

Visible creases or folds beneath the eyes, which may become more noticeable with age or repeated facial expressions.

Learn more

Fade the look of sun spots, freckles, and uneven pigmentation for a more even-toned complexion.

Learn more
